Lionel de Antwerp nació en la ciudad de Antwerp (Amberes), actual Bélgica -de donde le viene el sobrenombre-, el 29 de noviembre de 1338, siendo el tercer hijo varón -pero segundo superviviente- del rey Eduardo III de Inglaterra y de Felipa de Hainault. Se casó en la Torre de Londres, el 9 de septiembre de 1342, a los 3 años de edad, con Isabel de Burgh, condesa de Ulster, hija única y heredera de Guillermo de Burgh, conde de Ulster, de 10 años; el matrimonio fue realizado formalmente en 1352, entrando Lionel en posesión de todos los ricos estados irlandeses patrimonio de su mujer, aunque ya había comenzado a usar el título de conde de Ulster desde 1347. De este enlace nació 1 hija: ● Felipa (n. palacio de Eltham, Kent, 16.8.1355 - m. Cork, 5.1.1382), condesa de Ulster al suceder a su madre en 1363; casada con Edmundo Mortimer, conde de March (n.1352-m.1381). De este matrimonio nacieron cuatro hijos, el mayor de los cuales, Roger Mortimer, hereda los condados de March y Ulster. La hija de Roger, Ana Mortimer, casada con el conde Ricardo de Cambridge termina llevando Ulster y March a la casa de York al extinguirse la familia Mortimer en 1425. Entre sus descendientes se encuentran los reyes de Inglaterra Eduardo IV y Ricardo III.
